Default Formpanel submit: how do I read plain text server response?

I have an existing web server with services that do not respond with the ExtJS "success" key/value pair. I'm trying to avoid having to change an these existing services. Sorry, I'm still a newbie with ExtJS. I searched all day looking for an answer to these questions below.

    I have 2 issues:

    (1) One service (for authentication) only responds in plain text format. I'm able to call it and I see the authentication response in FireBug (which is good), but since it's plain text like "Basic IUYIDHKHFIHIUHIHYHH==" (without the quotes) it fails trying to decode it as JSON, which throws an error looking for the data to be encapsulated with braces or brackets. All I want to do is interrogate the TEXT response... how is this done? Do I need to extend Form?

    (2) All other services respond in JSON format, but none contain the "success" key/value. How do I handle this?

    Any help would be great.
