Default Button customization using background images

Is there a simple way to customize a button using it's frame elements as was possible in 3.x ?
I can see there are images in the Ext/resources/themes/images/default/btn directory... how do I put them to work though I run modern browser ?

if you want to show an icon along with the text, use the icon config of the button. If you want the image as the button, then you may use the html config and use the image tag.

Using am image is not good due to distortions when button is resized. (round corners).
See the implementation with 3.x where button was rendered using frame elements.
