What i want to do is use the ExtTop Desktop example and put a login box mask over the desktop, so the user is required to login before they have access.

Like this : https://leap.singlehop.com/

Where should I start? I would like it to be php & MySQL.

They are using a modal window. This means a window that prevents interaction with other layers beneath it. The default behavior of a modal window is to apply a shading gradient to layers beneath it. See: http://www.extjs.com/deploy/dev/docs/?class=Ext.Window (http://www.extjs.com/forum/../deploy/dev/docs/?class=Ext.Window)
Search for 'modal'

You will need to write the code to build the "desktop". Then write the code for the "login window".

You will then need to write the code to submit the fields in the login window to a serverside script (php+mysql is ok), which will return an answer. If the answer is success, close the window and it will automatically remove the mask. If the answer is failure, do whatever you want (i think they just clear the form in the window).

I would suggest learning how basic html forms work (POST and GET). Then work on building some test interfaces in Ext. Then come back and you'll probably have more specific questions about how to do this kind of authentication, and the answers you get might make a lot more sense.
